Baskin-Robbins

As 5:00 Wednesday rolled around, we remembered that Baskin-Robbins was selling ice cream for 31 cents a scoop. Heather, Luke and I were the only ones home, but we had no baby car seat. So we walked! It's not that far to Baskin-Robbins, and walking gave us the opportunity to walk off all the ice cream calories before we went back home to eat dinner. Yep! Dessert first. It's better that way, so they say.

He Is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!

We had lots of fun celebrating Easter at our house.
Luke had his first experience dying Easter eggs on Saturday.

After church on Easter Sunday, we celebrated with a ham dinner with both sides of the family. Luke had fun playing with bubbles outside with his cousins.

Later, we "hid" Easter eggs and Luke learned that it was lots of fun to look for them and open them up. Surprise! Five craisins inside!

Lotsa craisins!

Greta's New Job

I have a new job, starting in the fall! I will be a ceramics teacher at a small art place that is designed to supplement a homeschool education. They had been looking for someone with a BFA in ceramics (I am one year away from that!), understands homeschool families (I was homeschooled k-12), and is a Christian. Though their studio space is small, it is very sophisticated, and rivals even KSU's art department for supplies and equipment. I will be thrilled to be working with children again (I will probably have classes with children of all ages up through middle school. I won't be able to teach high school until I have my degree), but I am nervous about creating lesson plans and actually teaching a group! But I definitely know that God provided this job for me, and He will supply the wisdom and grace needed.

Where I'm From

I found an interesting "poem" template on another blog (can't remember quite where at the moment). I gave it a try and it was lots of fun to write, but I hesitated for a week or so to publish it here. Disclaimer: I am not a "real" poet, or even a "real" writer for that matter.

Where I’m From

I am from Melmac dishes and the big box of 64 Crayolas,
From the Singer Featherweight and McCalls patterns;
Blue station wagons and a yellow split-level house.
I am from Danish Modern and sliding glass doors, from
ice plant-covered slopes and apricot trees perfect for climbing.

I am from Advent calendars and summer days on the beach.
I am from sharp tongues and curly hair and a penny saved;
From Mary Ethel and Mary Angeline,
From the Tallmons and the Aldens and the Winslows.

I am from lakeside campgrounds and water skiing every summer;
From Saturday morning chores and
Too-tight school shoes at Gallencamp’s.
I am from Dad’s one-line songs;
From look-at-me-when-I’m-talking-to-you and stop-crying-or-I’ll-give-you-something-to-really-cry-about.

I am from Jesus loves me and the old rugged cross,
From Sunday School quarterlies and Salvation Army officers.
I am from starched petticoats under puffy dresses;
From Sunday evening sings and Saturday evening choir practice.

I am from the Golden State and Santa Ana winds, the Hill with ocean views,
From the best brownies in the world;
From taco casserole and homemade bread,
And apricots dried in the sun.

I am from proud pioneers and visionaries who saw possibilities,
Nurserymen; pineapple growers;
English kings and Methodist circuit riders;
From plumbers and teachers and builders
and wagon trains across the prairie.

I am from black paper scrapbooks
And slide shows at family gatherings;
From Grandma’s knitted afghans and Moremama’s colored glass displayed in the window,
I am from red felt Christmas stockings tucked safely in Mom’s cedar chest;
From use it up and wear it out, from make it do or do without.

Look at Me!

Luke loves light switches. But he's too short to reach them...until today. He pushed his step stool over to the wall and up he went.

School closed for a class-act Houdini

On Monday, most of the school systems in North Georgia were closed for a snow day. Granted, we only got less than an inch of snow, but school systems and some universities thought it best to close school, lest we get in a car wreck, since nobody here knows what to do when it snows.

When I say "some" universities, it should be obvious Kennesaw State was not one of those universities.

Well, the following day, we got our snow day. Instead of watching the snow fall, however, we watched Kennesaw State's finest search high and low for a short man wearing "black pants and a blue jacket", which coincidentally describes many of the police officers on campus.

Turns out that a Tennessee Sheriff's Deputy was transporting an inmate from Florida back into Tennessee to stand trial. The deputy was hungry, so he stopped at a Waffle House a few hundred feet from campus to grab some lunch. He left the inmate in the back of the car, which had no divider between the backseat and the front seats. Chris Gay, the inmate, managed to escape his handcuffs, leg shackles, and waist shackles and made a run for campus (I might add that he was not wearing a prisoner's jumpsuit, but was wearing the above mentioned black pants and blue jacket).

Two hours later, KSU decided classes were to be canceled for the rest of the day as both the KSU Police and 100 Cobb County Police searched high and low all over the campus. I barely managed to leave school before a complete lockdown was issued.

Two days later, they still haven't found him. Turns out this man has quite a record; he escaped custody a while back, stole a Walmart tractor trailer and drove it to Nashville, TN, where he stole a tour bus owned by some supposedly famous singer, who's name escapes my mind. After driving that bus down to Clearwater, FL (while the occupants thought he was the real bus driver), he was stopped and arrested. After being arrested, he was to be transported to Tennessee, but made a short (or long?) stop in Kennesaw. I'm sure by the time the 2 police helicopters and 4 news helicopters were over campus, he was half way across the state in another stolen vehicle.

Charity Ball

I was asked to be a princess on the court of a Mardis Gras charity ball. My father got to escort me down the aisle (dressed in a costume), to the foot of the dias where I curstied to the king of the ball, then took my seat on a throne.

After the court was assembled, the Queen of the ball (who was the former president of my university) declared that she wished the princesses to have a special moment with their fathers; dancing.
After some "entertainment" the court paraded around the ballroom, dancing to "When the Saints Go Marching In".

The night culminated in dinner and dancing. Daniel and I wowed the whole room with our swing dancing.
