We have a birthday picked out

Today we picked out Peep's birthday, if he doesn't decide to pick his own and show up sooner. We will be meeting our son no later than Monday, December 10. Today (Nov 27) is the "official" due date, but for all the nosy strangers who ask, Peep still has a couple of weeks to enjoy his snug little home.

Thursday, Dec 6 update: We're waiting for the new mom and dad to post the big news, with photos. Check back soon!

Thanksgiving Blessings

We did a day trip to Chattanooga with turkey and all the trimmings in tow.

Early Thursday morning we picked up niece Danica from the airport, then headed straight north. Heather looked quite uncomfortable, and she happily gave us free rein in her kitchen for the day. Immediately after dinner, she was quite ready to have that baby. Any day now, Peep!

On Saturday, we gave Danica the grand tour of Atlanta. Unknown to any of us, the big game of rivals GA Tech and UGA took place at the very same time that we arrived downtown. We ogled, gape-mouthed, at the spectators enjoying their pregame tailgate parties; tents and piles of trash included. All we really wanted to do was get to Centennial Olympic Park. We did eventually, along with half of suburban Atlanta. After getting our fill of every variety of Coke's beverages at World of Coke, we proceeded on to that bastion of high taste and healthfulness, The Varsity Drive-In, home of world famous hot dogs! And hamburgers! Southern-style! Loaded with grease!

Later in the evening, we took in a candlelight tour of three of the historic antebellum plantation homes of Roswell, decorated for Christmas. It was cold and drizzly, but fun. Next stop, supper at Cracker Barrel, another southern institution. I'm sure by now Danica has had her fill of southern-ness.

Homecoming

This past week was Homecoming Week at KSU. Student Government, as a student organization, participated in the various competitions throughout the week. I helped make the banner, ran in the three-legged race, and played the part of Lumiere (the candlestick in Beauty and the Beast) in a lip sync. Overall, Student Government won fourth place.

The theme was Around the World in Seven Days, and when I had an outfit, I wore it to compliment the continent of the day; my German dirndl and Celtic earrings for Europe day, and a Chinese blouse for Asia day.

The week culminated in the formal homecoming dance on Friday. Christine and I wore sparkly evening gowns, David wore his kilt, and Daniel wore his tuxedo. A lady at our church did my hair. But we had no plans for dinner. Mom suggested the brilliant plan of turning our dining room into an exclusive restaurant for four; candlelight, crystal, and Vivaldi. Chef Mother created a delicious three course dinner: salad and rolls; pork roast, twice baked potatoes, and broccoli, and a fabulous chocolate cake.

US Junior Solo Piping Championship

David was invited to compete at the first annual US Junior Solo Piping Championship in Pittsburgh this past weekend. He joined 17 other teens (age limit under 18) from around the US at Carnegie Mellon University for the Saturday competitions in Piobaireachd and MSR (march, strathspey, reel). Mom went along as his chaperone.Fortunately, the competition was held indoors, so we avoided spending the day in the 35 degree weather. It was held on stage in a 300-seat auditorium in a beautiful marble building. Competitors came from all over the US - California to Texas to New Jersey and Maine. Most were in the top two Amateur piping levels in the US, so the field of playing was fairly level. Each competitor was allowed about an hour in the tuning room before being escorted on stage in front of three judges and an audience. The pressure was intense; one little slip of memory or finger, and a competitor would be eliminated. David played beautifully, but he ended up not placing. Even so, his performance was one to be proud of.

The long day ended with a concert in Carnegie Music Hall by the world champion Irish band St. Laurence O'Toole Pipe Band. The concert - while a bit long - showed off some of the best music in the piping world. And to make things better, all the competitors were given very nice complimentary seats.

Oh, yes, and one bit of excitement to begin our trip: David's suitcase took a leisurely tour of the US, courtesy of the friendly skies of Delta, while mom and kid stressed out in Pittsburgh over the lack of uniform (required to compete). It did arrive by special delivery Saturday morning, in time for his first performance.

Princess Bride Party

Greta and David went to a friend's house last night for a "Princess Bride Party", in costume. David was Wesley and Greta was the pirate ship. She even included the waves splashing on the sides of her ship. See if you can find them in the photo below! (It's corny, in fitting with the puns in the movie.) Greta's best friend also went, as Buttercup. I'm not sure what the party included, other than watching the movie and eating snacks.
