Stand Up and Cheer

Heather and Luke came for a visit this weekend while Jared is at a wedding. Luke, using his hand-and-foot crawl, is having a ball exploring a different home. Cupboards and drawers, doors, door stops (twaaaaangggg!), under tables and behind chairs are all victims of his explorations.

Here is a short video clip of his most recent (tonight) new skill:

In case you missed it, he stands on his own ~ at eight months old ~ while he claps!

Happy August Birthdays!

We had a very narrow window of opportunity to celebrate all the August birthdays combined. Heather and Jared arrived this afternoon; Jared leaves for a wedding in the morning. Happy Birthday to Jared, Heather, and Greta. We recycled the cake and the candles three times...

...as each birthday person had their turn at the singing and the candle-blowing.

By the third go at it, the candles were getting a bit short...
...and the birthday people were looking a bit exhausted. But it's no wonder; their combined age is 73.

Unusual Class

Classes just started for me here at KSU. It's my second day of classes, so our professors are still introducing themselves and going over the syllabus. I had World Civilizations this morning. I found a spot near the front, and watched as people kept pouring in. Soon there were more people then seats. That's odd, I thought, but ignored it as I chatted with my neighbor. She mentioned looking forward to learning about political science, which startled me, but knew I was in the right class; I had checked the room number this morning.

Then in walked a decidedly non-Asian professor (my history prof has an Asian name) and he started writing "Political Science 1101, Dr. McKelvy" on the board. Soon we discovered that there were three classes all assigned to the same room at the same time: Political Science, Criminal Justice, and World Civilizations. One person facetiously suggested that we combine all three classes, which got a laugh out of the room, while the professors went to their department heads to figure out the mix-up.

We got the room, and as soon as the rest of the students had filed out, we started class, forty-five minutes late. Dr. Jhaung was explaining his grading policy when a strobe light flashed. Annoyed, I look around for the person with a camera. The it flashed again. Maybe the lights were flickering? In the quizzical hush that followed, I noticed the alarm strobes mounted on the wall near the Power Point screen. A canned voice issued obscure warnings as we filed past our resigned professor. Class had lasted five minutes.

Dad's 80th Birthday

Mom (that's me) flew to California over the weekend for a family birthday party celebrating Dad's/Gramps' 80th birthday. We had a special time with Dad, Mom, and the four girls: dinner out on Friday night, an at-home salmon dinner on Saturday, and lots of reminiscing and laughs between. Sunday, two girls had to leave, while the rest of us went to church, then enjoyed a relaxing afternoon at the pool . The whole extended family (30 or so of us) contributed to a little booklet entitled "80 Memories for 80 Years", and Dad really enjoyed that.

Luke's Baptism

Luke was baptized at First Pres on Sunday. He didn't make a peep during the entire ceremony; he didn't mind the water on his head; and he didn't mind having a stranger hold him.

He wore his little white romper that Gram made for him.

When the pastor asked us to sing "Jesus Loves Me", Luke looked the congregation over very carefully, and then joined in by "singing" along.

What has David Been Up To?

I'm up in Indiana right now with a friend I met from a camp a year ago. So far we've gone skiing (I finally got up on a single ski and can cut across the wake most of the time - sometimes on purpose, sometimes on accident), went to the state fair, and have had a good time doing random things.

David (the guy I'm staying with - yes, we're both David, usually referred to as "D squared") has his private pilots license, so we went flying today. I flew for a little bit - nothing much.

Plane we flew

The David you know (flying right now)

The David you don't know

Having fun in a zero-gravity environment :-)
